tiktok creator miriam tinny on microdosing retirement
can you separate your ambition from your career?
Hello ratlings!
Yesterday I published an essay on microdosing retirement, in which I unpacked my own relationship with work. Is there any happy medium between the compulsion to optimize and absolutely rotting? I’m still not sure.
That essay was partially inspired by a conversation with my friend Miriam Tinny, a TikTok creator with a unique content niche — she curates conversations based on what she’s reading, listening to, and watching. Her videos range from discussing the politics of friendship to debating the responsibility that creators have in moderating their own comments.
I, along with many others in my generation, am at a crossroads in our career paths. Miriam, for example, left her job earlier this year because she was burnt out and disillusioned by corporate workplace culture. Upon quitting her job, Miriam posted a video asking viewers to share their experience with work, collecting their answers via Google form. What did they like about their jobs? What are they curious about in fields they don’t currently work in? She also asked viewers about their “unofficial resume” — the experiences that weren’t “professional” but are still pivotal in their lives. Miriam is collecting the answers for a video project called “Loose Ties.”
I grabbed coffee with Miriam in February, just before deciding to attempt a month of microdosing retirement. You can read the rest of our conversation here :)
